Adapting to a changing highschool population

This paper reports the recent changes in the EE Bachelor program at the University of Twente. Recent generations of freshman students exhibited a lack in mathematics skills and the ability to grasp the physics behind the equations. By starting of the curriculum with a new course “Introduction to electronics and electrical engineering (IEEE)? we have managed to solve the issue of lacking entry levels while simultaneously eliminating the unmotivated or under skilled students in a very early stage in their studies

CLARIN’s Support for Research into the Acquisition of Lexical Properties

    Get PDF
Odijk (2011) sketched a research question on the acquisition of lexical properties of words, and illustrated it with some concrete examples, in particular with respect to the lexical properties of the Dutch synonyms heel, erg, and zeer (all meaning ‘very’). This work also indicated what the CLARIN infrastructure should offer to make it possible to address this research question. In this contribution I sketch to what extent the CLARIN infrastructure has achieved these requirements and desiderata. The resulting picture is mixed: (1) some have been implemented; (2) some have not been implemented and are still highly desirable; (3) some have not been implemented but turned out to be not so urgent; (4) new requirements and desiderata have arisen in the last 10 years, only some of which have been implemented. In this way, I evaluate the development of the CLARIN infrastructure (mainly its Netherlands part) over the past 10 years, and sketch the requirements and desiderata for the CLARIN infrastructure to address this research question for the next 10 years

Induction of a mutant phenotype in human repair proficient cells after overexpression of a mutated human DNA repair gene.

Antisense and mutated cDNA of the human excision repair gene ERCC-1 were overexpressed in repair efficient HeLa cells by means of an Epstein-Barr-virus derived CDNA expression vector. Whereas antisense RNA did not influence the survival of the transfected cells, a mutated cDNA generating an ERCC-1 protein with two extra amino acids in a conserved region of its C-terminal part resulted in a significant sensitization of the HeLa transfectants to mitomycin C-induced damage. These results suggest that overexpression of the mutated ERCC-1 protein interferes with proper functioning of the excision repair pathway in repair proficient cells and is compatible with a model in which the mutated ERCC-1 protein competes with the wildtype polypeptide for a specific step in the repair process or for occupation of a site in a repair complex. Apparently, this effect is more pronounced for mitomycin C induced crosslink repair than for UV-induced DNA damage

The strategic impact of META-NET on the regional, national and international level

This article provides an overview of the dissemination work carried out in META-NET from 2010 until 2015; we describe its impact on the regional, national and international level, mainly with regard to politics and the funding situation for LT topics. The article documents the initiative's work throughout Europe in order to boost progress and innovation in our field.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Sustainability and Genericity of CLARIN Services in the Netherlands

    Get PDF
Based on the ten years that have elapsed since the start of the CLARIN- NL project and its follow-up CLARIAH-NL, this chapter offers an analysis of the sustainability and genericity of services created in the context of CLARIN in the Netherlands. Our focus is on search applications, for which we make a proposal for coming to a more efficient and sustainable approach not only in the Netherlands but also CLARIN-wide. We also offer a number of general recommendations for improving sustainability of infrastructure services

Enriching a Scientific Grammar with Links to Linguistic Resources: The Taalportaal

    Get PDF
Scientic research within the humanities is dierent from what it was a few decades ago. For instance, new sources of information, such as digital grammars, lexical databases and large corpora of real-language data oer new opportunities for linguistics. The Taalportaal grammatical database, with its links to other linguistic resources via the CLARIN infrastructure, is a prime example of a new type of tool for linguistic research.
